Being stuck indoors during the winter months can really bring about a case of the doldrums, especially when the kids are raring to get outside to do something...anything! Just because it's cold outside doesn't mean there still isn't plenty to do outdoors with the kids in tow.

Taking the kids hiking on trails, in a national park, or on a mountain, can be a great way to get in that time outdoors and get in some much-needed exercise for the whole family! Here are 5 spots where families can hit the trails and enjoy the winter scenery.

Schuylkill River Trail

The Schuylkill River Trail can be a good trail to visit during the winter months, if hiking atop snow-covered trails is on the agenda. This trail, with various entry points throughout the region, has many areas that remain covered in snow after a snowfall.

Tyler State Park

Tyler State Park offers a lot of fun for a family, even during the winter months. Located in Bucks County, the trails run along the Neshaminy Creek, featuring routes of varying difficulty. And it even has a great spot for sledding, so pack those sleds for the hike!

Struble Trail

The Struble Trail, located in Chester County, follows the East Branch of the Brandywine Creek. The trail is generally flat and paved, making it a great spot to take smaller kids for easy hiking. Insider tip: This is an excellent spot to bring little ones to test out the new bikes they got for Christmas! It's more scenic than a driveway, and it's mostly smooth and level.
