There’s definitely something to be said about a cozy weekend spent at home during the chilly month of January. But if you’re growing just a wee bit tired of “Mooom, I’m bored!”, it might be time to plan an outing for the whole gang and get out of the house! Lots of great performances going on in Jersey this weekend: check out the Laurie Berkner Band and her high-energy dance songs at the McCarter Theater, Ivy + Bean The Musical at South Orange Performance Arts Center or Sid the Science Kid Live at BPAC. For some hands-on fun and learning, sign up for one of Great Swamp’s popular Maple Sugaring Demos during their peak season or take a crash course in Backyard Birding at the Reeves-Reed Arboretum. Maple Sugaring at Great Swamp (Chatham, NJ)
The sap is flowing and the sugaring season is underway at the Great Swamp OEC. Experience all the sweet sights and smells at a maple sugaring demonstration as you discover the process from start to finish by identifying and tapping maple trees, collecting sap and seeing syrup made over a wood-fired evaporator. Taste test included!

Saturday, January 24th

The Laurie Berkner Band Hometown Dance Party Concert (Princeton, NJ)
If you like Laurie Berkner and her high energy, kid-friendly dance hits, this will be an enjoyable experience; the lovely McCarter theater + songs from her new album, The Ultimate Laurie Berkner Band Collection = a fun day this Saturday!

Ivy + Bean, The Musical (South Orange, NJ)
Ivy + Bean, The Musical is the story of an unexpected friendship between two very different second graders and is based on the New York Times best-selling children's books series by author Annie Barrows and Illustrator Sophie Blackhall. Families will enjoy the mischief, laughter and of course, life lessons as this sweet story is turned into a musical comedy.

Frozen Ball (Union, NJ)
Liberty Hall Museum has been ‘Frozen’ over by Queen Elsa and her icy powers for a Frozen-themed event that invites kids to make a craft, play games and warm up at a delicious hot chocolate bar packed with sweet treats. A special guest makes an appearance, and kids are encouraged to come dressed as a favorite character.

Backyard Birding for Families (Summit, NJ)
Just because it’s wintertime doesn’t mean the kiddos can’t explore nature! Families are invited to Reeves-Reed Arboretum for a backyard birding adventure this weekend. Create a simple bird feeder to take home and learn all about the different types of birds that may visit in the winter time.

In Search of Owls (Pennington, NJ)
Bundle up and head to the Stony Brook-Millstone Reserve for their 'In Search of Owls' program.  Begin the evening indoors with a presentation that will introduce you to owls, their calls and adaptations. After a Naturalist-led night hike in search of the nocturnal raptors, get cozy inside as you warm up with a hot beverage!  

Sunday, January 25th

Sid the Science Kid Live (Englewood, NJ)
Like your science doled out in manageable bites from a puffy, purple-haired boy? Then run, don't walk, to BPAC on Sunday for the live version of the popular kids' show. Sid and Teacher Susie are along to keep the music flowing as the class explores the world around them with fun audience interaction and problem solving.

Afternoon Tea Party (Westfield, NJ)
Children can bring their favorite doll to Just Bead Yourself for an Afternoon Tea Party. The festivities include iced tea, lemonade and cookies. Bead specialists will help kids design a necklace for themselves and a matching one for their special doll.
