This Week's Picks: Get ready for Winter! The Return of Seaside Skating, November 3-7

11/3/14 - By Jacqueline Stansbury

It is time to set aside the Halloween Hoopla and get serious - or at least until the Holiday Hoopla sets in. For our oldest kids, college applications are due, and the Santa Monica Public Library has an evening for parents and students geared towards writing that all important college essay. And while we're mentioning things educational, the first week of the month always has a few free admission days at local museums. Beyond that, there is lots to do in Pasadena this week; outdoor ice skating returns in Santa Monica, and the LEGO aficionados in my house would fire me if I forgot to remind everybody that the first Tuesday of the month is always a free Lego model giveaway at participating stores. Who needs Halloween anyway?

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

1. Writing Winning College Essays – Monday
The Fairview Branch library in Santa Monica hosts an informative evening for parents and students, moderated by a UCLA certified counselor. Younger siblings can tag along to enjoy the treat of curling up in one of the library's cozy corners for some early evening reading time.

2. Free Family Night at Kidspace – Tuesday
My family loves this museum in Pasadena, and we're not alone. November's special free night celebrates California’s Native Americans, with Chumash inspired stories and crafts.

3. Oceanarium Workshop – Wednesday
This hands-on workshop at the Oakwood Rec Center in Venice includes a walk to the beach and a living laboratory filled with sea creatures.

4. Ice Grand Opening – Thursday
The City of Santa Monica hosts its 8th Season of the Southland's most popular outdoor ice rink, that is just a stone’s throw from the ocean. Just another remind of how great it is to live in California. World champion skaters always hit the ice for this free annual event, which also promises crafts and snacks for kids waiting for the zamboni to finish.

5. Free Day at Pasadena Museum of California Art – Friday
Pasadena's cool museum dedicated to California art, architecture, and design from 1850 to the present has its monthly free day. But Pasadena isn't the only community with free museum days; the art museum in Long Beach offers free admission every Friday. And that's just the tip of the free museum day iceberg.
